Finally an Update

Much has happened since the last update. The Irish Red's been bottled, stored and mostly gone. I keep hearing it's pretty good, but I'm not convinced. For a first batch I guess I did OK. We cracked the first ones open at 'gpas' house a few weeks ago. A bunch of us went down for 4 day and rebuilt their back deck. More about the deck and the Irish Red in another post.

Fired up the stove and brewed up a batch of American Wheat a few weeks ago. Just got that in bottles the other day. I'll be posting on that soon as well.

And, a third batch this past weekend, the Chinook IPA I got during the NB IPA sale a while back. Point to note, don't have liquid yeast shipped during 90+ heat. There's a whole story on that coming.

Already planning the next batch, a Pumpkin Rye Pale Ale. Kind of a speculation on my part, and got buy in from the homebrew store guy. Unlike many Pumpkin beers this one will have actual pumpkin in it, and not the jack-o-lantern type. The extract kit I'm using is the Brewers Best Rye Pale Ale and I'm leaving out the Columbus hops to tone it down and let the pumpkin & spice show.

The distraction to posting is to blame on 13 feet of worn out gelcoat on a Boston Whaler. It was long overdue for an update and a second lifetime. Gpa got it from our cousin and who knows were they got it from. It's been lurking at the shop (search QIR on fourquare if you care) for several years.

The boat is a 1970 13 Sport, and the engine a 1960 Johnson Super Seahorse in very good original condition. The interior gelcoat was ground down as needed to get rid of the bad stuff, and sprayed with resin and milled fiberglass to strengthen the surface against further problems. The outside was ground totally off, built up with resin and faring powder, then a coat of gelcoat to hold it for the season. We'll be spraying 2 layers of gelcoat on inside and out over the fall/winter/spring.

The first real ride, after an initial shake down (the engine doing the shaking) and post adjust ride 2 weekends ago, my son Matt and his cousin Jess went out for an hour or so. Had the tube in the car, but opted for a just a ride. All went great and it zips right alone with 3 adult sized people. Matt and I went out again this past sunday, and dropped the anchor so he could catch some fish. Pole crisis aside it went well. 5 baby fish (4 different kinds, too) in less time than it took him to deal with the pole crisis. Start on this trip was shaky, 2 min from dock and the engine died. Restarted several times as we limped to the dock. Looks like debris in the bowl caused the issue. Cleaned it out, and it ran great the rest of the day. Taking it to Gpa's this weekend for some fun on the water there.

Almost bottling day

The Irish Red is resting comfortably, and I'm counting down the days to bottling. Hoping to bottle this weekend, and brew up the American Wheat that I've got lined up. Took advantage the the Northern Brewers IPA sale this week, and ordered up the Chinook and Dead Ringer extract kits. I'm trying the liquid yeast with them.
Still pining for a wine cooler like the one I gave away... The basement is just not cool enough in this heat. The   secondary is running about 72-74. Hoping it's not affecting the flavor.
